Book Expos - A Thought Crushed Our Minds

About Book Expos

Previous Entry Book Expos Mar. 28th, 2006 @ 10:23 am Next Entry

A question to other publishers, booksellers, and self-marketing authors:

Has anyone gone the route of sending their titles off to be sold at a book expo? And if so, what sort of experience did you have? Common sense tells me there's little to be gained by it if your company doesn't already have a name and bookbuyers aren't going to be specifically looking for your titles, but I don't want to be naive and ignore a potentially helpful marketing tool. Any personal experience or advice anyone has on the topic is quite welcome.

I believe John Lawson/RDSP attempted this at one point, sending their books to expos via Prime Books. Don't quote me, but I think that was the case.

I need to shoot him an email...haven't talked to him in a while...

You'd have to be more specific, in terms of what you mean by book expo, I think. If you mean a genre-convention then sometimes it's worth it, if you have space on someone's table. It's not really viable, though, if you just have one title to sell on your own table.

Actually, I was thinking more in terms of expos for bookbuyers and libraries where I send off my titles, paying a per-title fee to have it displayed, and they make my book available with the promise of a full-frontal display. It's a fee of, like, $75 per title for the regional expos or $150 for the national expos. I knew it wouldn't be advantageous to take only one or two titles to a con; if I reserved a table at a con, I'd intend to share it w/ someone who also only has a handful of titles but I haven't looked into that at all just yet as I'm waiting until my catalogue is larger.

I'm not too certain that that is cost-effective in sending books to expos, much less advantageous to you, as you aren't there to push the title or represent the company. There's no particular need for readers to pick up your title. You're better off trying to get reviews, to move copies.
